TMJ/TMD Therapy
Conyers, GA
The temporomandibular joint – or TMJ – is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull, and when it’s not functioning properly it can cause a surprising range of uncomfortable symptoms. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, refers to a group of conditions affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles, often resulting in jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, earaches, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully. The causes of TMD are varied and can include teeth grinding, bite misalignment, stress, or injury. At our Conyers dental office, we take a conservative, non-invasive approach to TMJ therapy — starting with a thorough evaluation to understand what’s driving your symptoms and tailoring a treatment plan accordingly. For many patients, a custom nightguard or occlusal splint can provide significant relief by reducing the strain placed on the joint during sleep. If you’ve been living with jaw pain or chronic headaches in Conyers, GA and haven’t found answers, it may be time to take a closer look at your TMJ.

TMJ/TMD FAQ's
What is TMJ/TMD?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint – the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is a term used to describe a range of conditions affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles, often causing pain, stiffness, and dysfunction.
What are the most common symptoms of TMD?
Symptoms can include jaw pain or soreness, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing, headaches, earaches, neck and shoulder tension, and limited range of motion in the jaw.
What causes TMD?
TMD can result from a number of factors including teeth grinding or clenching, bite misalignment, stress, jaw injury, or arthritis in the joint. In many cases it’s a combination of factors rather than a single cause.
How is TMD treated?
We take a conservative approach first – which often includes a custom nightguard or occlusal splint to reduce strain on the joint, along with recommendations for jaw exercises, lifestyle adjustments, and stress management. More involved treatment is rarely necessary.
What is a nightguard and how does it help?
A nightguard is a custom-fitted oral appliance worn during sleep that creates a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth. It helps reduce the strain of grinding and clenching on your jaw joint and muscles, and protects your enamel from wear.
How long does it take to feel relief?
Many patients notice improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment, particularly with a nightguard. Full resolution of symptoms can take longer depending on the severity of the condition and how long it has been present.
